IFL 2026 Week 15: What We Learned

What a weekend of football we had in the IFL. We've got a switch up at the top of the Western Conference and we've got the middle of the Eastern Conference getting very exciting for the final quarter of the season.
Teams are starting to lock in their playoff spots and we've now got teams officially eliminated (even though multiple have unofficially eliminated for months now).
But what did we learn?
Vegas Knight Hawks @ San Diego Strike Force
Result: 43-39 San Diego
What We Learned: Ed Vander is BACK for the Strike Force & Vegas continues to stumble on offense
This was one of the most anticipated games of the entire 2026 IFL Season for me and it was a fun watch. San Diego has been quietly on a bit of a run this season and got their first 'major' test against Vegas and delivered a great performance.
Ed Vander came back from injury and was quickly in the mix in a big way, with 2 TDs on the ground and TEN catches for 95 yards and a TD through the air, including a 36 yard bomb in the second half that really flexed his versatility to this offense. But I think one of the bigger stories of the game was how well this San Diego defense played, especially the defensive line. They were getting after Vegas QB Jayden DeLaura often and put this usually high octane Knight Hawks offense behind the sticks multiple times and were able to severely limit the ground attack of Josh Tomas.
This was a statement win for the Strike Force but they will have a gauntlet ahead of them to close out the season and get ready for the playoffs, as they clinched a postseason spot this past weekend as well.
For Vegas, this was a tough game for them offensively -- yet they still had a chance to win it at the very end. As mentioned previously, Jayden DeLaura was under a ton of pressure in this game but still managed to push the ball downfield and find Quentin Randolph & Dashon Stoudamire for 2 TDs a piece.
While they couldn't really get Josh Tomas fully going in this one, they were able to get Stoudamire in the mix on the ground and punch it into the end zone twice for four total scores on the day.
Vegas had a similar offensive lull in the at points in the middle of the 2025 season and things obviously worked out for them in the end, so I would say there is zero need for any Vegas folks to be panicking. This is still one of the most stacked teams in the league and they locked in their playoff ticket just like San Diego did this weekend.
Iowa Barnstormers @ Fishers Freight
Result: 55-13 Fishers
What We Learned: Fishers is simply an overpowering matchup for the Barnstormers & Iowa continues to be the roughest watch in the IFL
Just like 2025, Fishers had a skid in the middle of the season that slightly derailed things but they managed to get back on track a lot sooner in the 2026 campaign and now sit at 7-6 on the year. This was a game where Fishers really didn't need to reinvent the wheel to beat Iowa for the third time this season.
Run the ball, push the pile, punch it in to the end zone, repeat. Then you mix in the Freight defense putting the claps on this Iowa offense and this was a no-brainer from wire-to-wire.
The Fishers offense looked in control, the defense dominated and the special teams even got in the mix with a pair of blocked field goals -- but being that they did this against a struggling Iowa, you gotta have some pause with it before getting too excited. Fishers has a tough stretch of Green Bay, Quad City & Orlando to finish off their season, and will likely need some help to get into the playoffs at this point as they are just on the outside looking in at the time of this blog being posted.
For Iowa, another rough one for this offense that has shown some burst but hardly any consistency, especially in the backhalf of the season.
RB David Elder & WR Demonte Martin were the lone bright-ish spots for this team, with both finding the end zone and really being the primary sources for any sort of life for the offense. The team looked like they were often a slow but steady start in the first half, but just couldn't seem to get anything going in the second half and just fell completely flat.
Bad fumbles, multiple blocked kicks, rough first down efficiency... just an unideal day to add to the list of unideal games for this Iowa Barnstormers team. They'll have a tough stretch to end the season and can probably finish 2-14 at best, but face a gauntlet of Tulsa, Green Bay, Jacksonville & then San Antonio to finish out the year.
San Antonio Gunslingers @ Tulsa Oilers
Result: 54-25 Tulsa
What We Learned: Tulsa continues to be the hottest team in the East & San Antonio is back to being who we thought they were The Gunslingers & Oilers collided for the third time this season and the Tulsa, yet again, handled San Antonio pretty decisively. QB TJ Edwards led the way with a good but not great game, but that was all that was needed in this one as it was pretty much in hand at halftime. The Oilers got TJ Davis back from the CFL and this already stacked WR room got even deeper and is going to be scary down the stretch.
RB Caleb Ramseur continues to be a key piece of the offense and a big reason why this team has reversed their fortunes after a 2-5 start to the season. Defensively, the Oilers defense was causing havoc and creating multiple turnovers, including a Pick Six from Tre Harvey (friend of the program) and suddenly this Oilers team is in control of their own destiny to get into the playoffs.
Truthfully, a home playoff game isn't out of the picture for the Oilers either, despite being 2 games back with 4 games to go. But we'll touch on that a little later..
For San Antonio, after a MASSIVE offensive explosion two weeks ago against the New Mexico, the pendulum swung back violently as they regressed back to the mean (and then some).
QB Zach Calzada looked like an IFL rookie out there after a massive debut earning IFL Offensive Player of the Week, with multiple interceptions and poor timing on throws before inevitably getting tossed from the game late due to some bottom-of-the-pile shenanigans.
Deon Cook hauled in pair of TDs and this Gunslingers offense did justtttt enough to hit the Over (tyfys), but overall the theme of offensive struggles for San Antonio lingered into this game as well.
They are averaging 33.2 PPG this season (and that is with a 74 point outburst), which simply isn't good enough to be competitive in the IFL.
Arizona Rattlers @ Tucson Sugar Skulls
Result: 35-28 Tucson
What We Learned: Tucson continues to be the hottest team in the West & there is a QB controversy in Arizona
The Tucsonnnnnn Sugar Skulls! The hottest team in the Western Conference got another win, albeit not the prettiest of their wins this season but a win is a win and they all count the same.
The Tucson defense deserves the bulk of the credit for this game, where they embodied the "bend but don't break" mantra and managed to keep Arizona out of the end zone for the majority game after giving up a couple of quick scores in the 1st quarter.
DB Aaron Jackson (friend of the program) hauled in 2 INTs, include the one to seal the victory late, and this entire defense was swarming to make big play after big play as the game progressed. RB Brandon Mackey (friend of the program) also had a big day with 3 total TDs and continues to be the driving force of the ground game. QB Ja'Rome Johnson didn't have his best outing in this one, completing less than 50% of his passes with 2 TDs & 3 INTs, but the fact that they still managed to win this game despite that shows the leaps and bounds improvements of this team from the beginning of the season.
The Sugar Skulls have now won 4 straight, including 3 against teams currently slotted in the playoffs, and now have a firm grasp of their own destiny to the playoffs.
For Arizona, it might be time to have the discussion at the QB spot. After starting the season with Max Meylor at the helm, they flipped to long time Rattlers Drew Powell just before the IFL Cup and have been rolling with him ever since.
But the past couple of games, the Arizona has struggled on offense and come up empty on drives that we usually see them cash in on.
For example, end of the first half in this game against Tucson, Arizona had the ball in the red zone with 11 seconds left and failed to get any points. We saw the same thing in the IFL Cup game against the Vegas Knight Hawks.
Mix in 3 INTs and this game went from very winnable and to a loss pretty quickly. It seems like the Rattlers should be able to figure out how to get the most of out the reigning MVP instead of having ride the bench, but we'll have to wait and see how it all shakes out.
Northern Arizona Wranglers @ New Mexico Chupacabras
Result: 35-32 New Mexico
What We Learned: New Mexico has an astounding "cool jersey to bad team" ratio & Northern Arizona found ways to lose this game (and lose their head coach)
In a battle of 1-10 teams, SOMEBODY had to win this game. We were not going anywhere until we had a victor! Northern Arizona was in control for the majority of this game and had multiple opportunities to bury New Mexico, but they just couldn't convert on short field moments and settled for field goals way too often (five times). QB Anthony Garrett had a decent day on paper with nearly 200 passing yards & 4 TDs, but a sub-50% completion percentage and being fairly limited in the ground game really put the cap on the offense. A very winnable game that the Wranglers let slip through their fingertips. To make matters worse, NAZ announced they were parting ways with head coach Ron James after the game after another season to forget in Prescott Valley.
For New Mexico, they busted out their unofficial Breaking Bad inspired jerseys and looked like Walter White from season 1 for the majority of this game. But in the 4th quarter, they became Heisenberg and took over this game.
La'James White had a solid day on the ground with 76 yards & 3 TDs, and they continued to lean on him in the Wildcat formation in those "& Goal" situations.
I would love to see Avaun Rucker get the starts on offense for the remainder of the season for the Chupacabras to see what he can do. Donovan Porterie is who he is at this point, and I think it is fair to toss the starting reps to the QB that is 15 years younger (respectfully).
Jacksonville Sharks @ Orlando Pirates
Result: 54-42 Orlando
What We Learned: Orlando is an outstanding in Kia Center & Jacksonville made a bold choice at QB that hasn't necessarily panned out...yet
In what was a borderline 'Can't Lose'/'Must Win' game for the Orlando Pirates, they showed up in a big way and looked like a playoff team against their in-state rivals.
QB Paxton DeLaurent was outstanding and has essentially cemented his place as the All-IFL Rookie team QB for the season, with 2 Passing TDs & 2 Rushing TDs while commanding the offense up and down the field all day.
But the story of the game for the Pirates has to be the defensive line and how disruptive they were early and often in this one. DLs Devonte O'Malley & Mike Mason were making Sharks QB Sammy Edwards' life very difficult in his first start and put the Orlando in a dominant spot in the first half.
The difference between Orlando at home and Orlando away has been jarring, to say the least. Pirates are 5-0 at home and 2-5 away from the Kia Center and are averaging 53.6 PPG at home vs 43.3 PPG away/neutral.
Bad news is Orlando only has one more home game left on the schedule and it is unlikely that they will be hosting a home playoff game at this point. They face a tough challenge in their final home game against the Green Bay Blizzard and will need to steal some games on the road in order to secure a playoff spot.
For Jacksonville, this was an interesting lead turn of events leading into this one. QB James Cahoon had been the starter all season up to this point, leading them to a 9-2 record with a Top 5 Scoring Offense. But the Sharks decided to flip the starting reigns over to QB Sammy Edwards for the final stretch of the season.
Sources have told it was due to some pressure from the ownership group, as they viewed Edwards as the more exciting player, so he got the starting nod in this one against the Pirates and it did not get off to a good start. Edwards looked rough in the first half and looked indecisive at times, but eventually settled in and started making some plays in the second half. Unfortunately, by that point they were in a 14-20 point hole for the majority of the game.
WR Marcus Rogers made his season debut for the Sharks after a stint in the CFL, hauling in a pair of TDs, but a lot of the production from the Sharks came after the Pirates were in firm control. This Sharks team has a tough stretch ahead to finish out the season and the switch at QB will be an interesting storyline to monitor as the season wraps up.
