Yes, you read that right.
During last night's Arizona Rattlers-Iowa Barnstormers game, Iowa play by play announcer Larry Morgan decided that 10:10 in the 2nd quarter was the ideal time to mention a story about RB Shannon Brooks getting hit by a train in college while dealing with a bout with depression:
"Shannon Brooks had a number of injuries at Minnesota..and actually survived getting hit by a train -- not directly -- but some metal from the train came up. The story was he was quite despondent over the death of his mother, went to a speeding train, said he was not really thinking suicide, but he was close enough that he got hit and had some severe facial injuries. But he recovered and was able to finish his Minnesota career... so it's an amazing comeback by Shannon Brooks as that catch by Jamal Miles picks up.."
HE EVEN DID THE NICK CASTELLANOS THING AT THE END! Oh man Larry.
Look, I am all for mental health awareness and being more transparent with struggles people are going through, but to air this out on the broadcast is CRAZY. It came out of nowhere and I had to rewind the stream multiple times to make sure I heard it correctly.
Play by play announcing is tough, you're having to describe the action on the field while simultaneously filling in the lulls in between -- but there's gotta be better stories to share.
